Widely acclaimed as one of today’s leading interpreters of Wagner and Strauss, Finnish soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä has established herself as one of the foremost dramatic sopranos of her generation. She has achieved major successes as Brünnhilde with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Daniel Harding and, most recently, at the Bavarian State Opera in Tobias Kratzer’s new Ring cycle conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. This summer, she returns to the Bayreuth Festival for its 150th anniversary season, making her eagerly anticipated role debut as Kundry in Parsifal under Pablo Heras-Casado.

The 2026/27 season opens for Miina-Liisa Värelä with her house debut as Elektra at the Zurich Opera House in Lydia Steier’s new production, conducted by Lorenzo Viotti. She appears as Isolde both in Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Jaap van Zweden and at the Vienna State Opera under Alexander Soddy. She also returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Ortrud in Lohengrin, conducted by Susanna Mälkki. The highlight of the season will be her debut as Brünnhilde in the complete Ring des Nibelungen at the Munich Opera Festival, where she will perform the roles of Brünnhilde in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung for the first time.

Her acclaimed portrayals of Die Färberin (Die Frau ohne Schatten) have included landmark productions at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden with Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Semperoper Dresden under Christian Thielemann, the Bavarian State Opera, Oper Frankfurt, and the Verbier Festival. Equally celebrated as Isolde (Tristan und Isolde), she has performed the role with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the BBC Proms, and Oper Frankfurt under Thomas Guggeis.

Her recent career highlights also include her Brünnhilde debut in Siegfried with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, her appearance as Ortrud (Lohengrin) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and her performance of Sieglinde with the Orchestre de Paris under Daniel Harding. Her repertoire extends beyond Wagner and Strauss to major dramatic roles including Leonore (Fidelio) with the Canadian Opera Company under Johannes Debus, Tosca at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Turandot at the Finnish National Opera, the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Gran Teatre del Liceu under Josep Pons, Elektra at the Landestheater Linz, as well as Anna in Aulis Sallinen’s Ratsumies under Hannu Lintu and Sibelius’s Kullervowith the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Robin Ticciati. Miina-Liisa Värelä is also a distinguished concert artist whose repertoire includes Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14, and other major orchestral works, earning widespread recognition for her combination of vocal power, dramatic intensity, and profound musical insight that defines her artistry.

A native of Finland, Värelä graduated from the prestigious Sibelius Academy and is a prizewinner of the Lappeenranta and Belvedere competitions. In 2026, she was honoured with the Oper!Award as Best Female Singer.
