Tomislav Mužek

Tomislav Mužek is renowned globally for his wide-ranging repertoire as a lyric-dramatic tenor. His expertise spans German and Italian works, as well as Russian, French, and Czech roles. His transition into this repertoire was solidified with his role debut as Lohengrin at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo in 2015, following a successful career as a lyric tenor. Since then, he has performed roles such as Erik, Stolzing, Max, Rodolfo, Don Carlo, Don José and the Prince in Rusalka, as well as Cavaradossi, Pinkerton, and Edgardo.

 

In the summer of 2023, Mužek’s portrayal of Erik in Der fliegende Holländer at the Bayreuth Festival garnered much acclaim. During the 2023/24 season, he performed Max (Der Freischütz) at the Semperoper Dresden, the Prince (Rusalka) at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, and Stolzing (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) at the Teatro Real in Madrid, amongst others. On the concert stage, he sang e.g. Verdi’s Requiem in Zurich and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria in Munich.

 

Tomislav Mužek has had a close association with the Semperoper Dresden since 2005, captivating audiences in roles such as Rodolfo (La Bohème), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), the King’s Son (Königskinder), Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Florestan (Fidelio), the Prince (Rusalka), Stolzing (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), and Max (Der Freischütz). In September 2023, he was honored with the “Rudi Häussler Prize” by the Semperoper Foundation.

 

As a guest artist, Tomislav Mužek has graced nearly all major European stages, including La Scala in Milan, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Paris National Opera, Saxon State Opera Dresden, Hamburg State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Vienna State Opera, Vienna Volksoper, Teatro Comunale Florence, Teatro Comunale Bologna, Teatro Regio Turin, Teatro San Carlo Naples, Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa, New National Theatre Tokyo, Zurich Opera House, Grand Theatre de Genève, Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse, and the Bayreuth Festival. He has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Myung-Whun Chung, Gianandrea Noseda, Gustavo Dudamel, Ottavio Dantone, Pierre Boulez, Christian Thielemann, Peter Schneider, Jonathan Darlington, Zubin Mehta, Sebastian Weigle, Ivor Bolton, Omer Meir Wellber, Christopher Hogwood, Christoph von Eschenbach and Manfred Honeck, among others.

 

Tomislav Mužek is also a sought-after concert and recital singer. Notable performances include Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis under Bernard Haitink with the Berlin Philharmonic at the 2007 Salzburg Easter Festival and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater under Christoph von Eschenbach with the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden in 2019.

 

In April 1999, Mužek won first prize at the international “Ferruccio Tagliavini” Singing Competition in Austria. This achievement led to his engagement at the Vienna State Opera in the 1999/2000 season, followed by a tenure as a lyric tenor at Theater Bremen until 2002, where he performed roles such as Don Ottavio, Ferrando, Alfredo, Rodolfo, and Tamino.

 

Born in Siegen, Tomislav Mužek studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he was a student of KS Robert Holl, specializing in lieder and oratorio.
