American tenor Bryan Register has garnered critical acclaim as “a Heldentenor who treats Wagner with the subtlety and tenderness of a Lieder singer, making the climaxes all the more powerful” (Opera Now). Renowned for his expressive vocal artistry, Register has graced the stages of many of the world’s most prestigious theaters, captivating audiences across Europe and beyond.
In the 2025/26 season, he will once again be heard in his signature role of Tristan (Tristan und Isolde): at the Korean National Opera in Seoul under Jaap van Zweden, in Bárbara Lluch’s production at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and at the Ljubljana Winter Festival. At the Croatian National Opera in Zagreb, he will make his role debut as Tannhäuser under the baton of Srba Dinić, and at the Wagner Days at Müpa in Budapest, he will appear on stage as Siegmund (Die Walküre) under Adam Fischer. He will also take on the role of Roméo in Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra under Dimitry Slobodeniouk.
In the 2024/25 season, he made his eagerly awaited role debut as Siegfried (Götterdämmerung) under Alain Altinoglu in Pierre Audi’s new production at La Monnaie in Brussels. Among other engagements, he returned to the Cottbus State Theater as Tristan, sang Bacchus in Ido Ricklin’s new production of Ariadne auf Naxos under Asher Fish at the New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, and appeared as Florestan in Fidelio at the Classic Busan Festival under the musical direction of Myung-Whun Chung.
In 2023/24, he sang Tristan with the Czech Radio Symphony in Prague, at the Aalto Theater in Essen and in a new production at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. He also gave two important role debuts: Parsifal (Parsifal) with the Spanish National Orchestra in Madrid under David Afkham and Erik (Der fliegende Holländer) with Pittsburgh Opera. He reprised the latter role in concert performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic under Jaap van Zweden, which were recorded for a CD publication on the NAXOS label.
2022/23, he is sang Verdi’s Otello with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marco Boemi and Florestan in Fidelio at the Nationale Reisopera in the Netherlands. He returned to the role of Tristan in a new production at Cottbus State Theater opposite Catherine Foster and in a concert performance with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa in Mexico.
In season 2021/22, he was invited to the Santa Fe Opera for Tristan and Isolde and performed Siegmund in Die Walküre at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, as well as the Baden-Baden Festival Theater, Enée in Les Troyens at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and Bacchus in the Opéra de Limoges’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos.
In 2020/21, he was scheduled to portray the Prince in Rusalka, as well as Tristan in Santa Fe and Tokyo which, in addition to other engagements, all fell victim to cancellations due to the Covid pandemic.
Highlights of the 2019/20 season include two house debuts: as Tristan at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and as Florestan in Fidelio at the National Theatre Prague, as well as his role debut as Prince in Rusalka at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strassbourg. On the concert stage, he performed Siegmund in the Singapore premiere of Die Walküre with the Orchestra of the Music Makers, conducted by Chan Tze Law.
Previous highlights include Tristan and the eponymous role in Lohengrin at La Monnaie and his debut at the Semperoper Dresden as Enée in Les Troyens in a new production by Lydia Steiner, a role that he had already sung at Frankfurt Opera in a new production by Eva Maria Höckmayr. Siegmund and Tristan, two of his most in-demand roles, have also taken him to Grange Park Opera, Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theatre and Theater Kiel. He sang Beethoven’ Symphony No.9 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the title role in Lohengrin at the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and the Drum Major in Wozzeck, as well as Florestan in Fidelio at English National Opera, conducted by Edward Gardner. The latter role he had also performed at Opera Omaha.
Since moving into the Wagnerian repertoire, Register has been sponsored by the Wagner Society of New York and the ‘Emerging Singers Program’ of the Wagner Society of Washington D.C. He was awarded second prize in the 2012 Liederkranz Vocal Competition (Wagner Division), was a prize winner in the 2008 Gerda Lissner competition, the 2006 Sullivan Foundation and the Licia Albanese/Puccini competitions and recipient of a Grant from the Liederkranz Foundation in 2006. Register trained at the Manhattan School of Music, receiving the Birgit Nilsson Scholarship, and at the studios of Santa Fe Opera and Glimmerglass Opera.
