Sophie Koch

The acclaimed French mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch regularly appears on the world’s most important opera stages. In addition to Brussels, Barcelona, Zurich and the Salzburg Festival, she performs in London, Dresden, Vienna and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

 

The artist impersonated all the important Mozart and Strauss roles, such as Cherubino, Dorabella, Sesto and Idamante, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos. More recently she has devoted herself more and more to the French and German repertoire, including Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther in Munich, Berlin, Chicago, Vienna and New York, Marguerite in La Damnation du Faust by Berlioz in Paris, Dresden and Amsterdam, Fricka and Waltraute in Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen in Paris, Munich and Vienna, and Venus in Tannhäuser in London, Paris and Budapest.

 

The mezzo-soprano regularly works with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Valery Gergiev, Sir Colin Davis, Antonio Pappano, Ivor Bolton, Sir Roger Norrington, Franz Welser-Möst, Zubin Mehta, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Philip Jordan, Kirill Petrenko, Kent Nagano, Sir Simon Rattle, to name but a few.

 

Recently Sophie Koch could be seen in the title role of Paul Dukas’ Ariane et Barbe-Bleue at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, she also returned to the Vienna State Opera as Fricka in Rheingold, the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos and Charlotte in Werther, made her debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (Muse/Nicklausse in The Tales of Hoffmann), and on her return to the Théâtre du Capitole made her celebrated role debut as Kundry in Parsifal. She has also appeared as Federica in Luisa Miller in Marseille and in numerous concerts throughout Europe. Other important projects of the recent past include her debuts as Marie/Wozzeck in Toulouse and as Sieglinde/Valkyrie in Marseille, as well as performances as Composer/Ariadne at La Scala in Milan and at the Maggio Musicale in Florence. Her latest appearances include her debut as Isolde in Toulouse, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at the Semperoper in Dresden, and her role debut as Gertrude at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich for the 2023 festival premiere of Brett Dean’s Hamlet. New productions in the current 2023/24 season include her role debut as Amme in Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Lisa in Weinberg’s The Passenger and Geneviève in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (both at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich).

 

Sophie Koch is internationally successful as a Lied and concert singer as well and appears regularly at major festivals including Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Edinburgh and the Vienna Musikverein. An extensive discography documents her artistic work, for which she was awarded the Christel Goltz Prize by the Semperoper Dresen in 2001 and the title Österreichische Kammersängerin by the Vienna State Opera in 2016. On DVD the artist can be seen alongside Renée Fleming in Der Rosenkavalier (Decca) and Ariadne auf Naxos (DGG) live from the Baden-Baden Festival and in Massenet’s Werther from the Paris Opera alongside Jonas Kaufmann (Decca).
