Mezzo-soprano Christel Loetzsch has established herself in the musical world with her versatile voice and compelling dramatic presence, particularly in the Romantic repertoire and contemporary music.

Highlights of the 2026/27 season include the role of Giovane Dante in Pascal Dusapin’s opera Il Viaggio, Dante at Staatsoper Hannover and on tour in Luxembourg. She previously participated in the work’s world premiere at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, conducted by Kent Nagano. In summer 2026, she will also perform the vocal role in the world premiere of his oratorio Heaven & Hell at Paris’s Grand Palais.

Christel Loetzsch will also make her Australian debut at the Adelaide Festival as Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle, in a production directed by Romeo Castellucci. She previously celebrated major successes in this role in Claus Guth’s production at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl and at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence.

Christel Loetzsch has appeared at leading musical institutions including the Opéra National de Paris, the Paris Opéra Comique, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Arena di Verona, San Francisco Opera, the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile and the Volksoper Wien, among others. In both opera and concert, she has worked with distinguished conductors such as Marek Janowski, Alain Altinoglu, Omer Meir Wellber, Klaus Mäkelä, Nicola Luisotti and Sebastian Weigle, to name but a few.

She has given the world premieres of several works by the French composer Pascal Dusapin, including Antigone in Paris under the direction of Klaus Mäkelä, as well as Oh, les beaux jours!—a monologue from Antigone—with Kent Nagano and the Dresden Philharmonic.

In 2020, she performed Dusapin’s Penthesilea with the Orchestre de Paris and, in 2019, made her debut at La Monnaie in Brussels as the Witch in his opera Macbeth.

Her modern repertoire also includes roles such as the Drummer in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and the title role in Philippe Boesmans’s Julie, performed with the Hamburg Symphony under Sylvain Cambreling. Her repertoire further encompasses roles such as Herodias (Salome), the Nurse (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Octavian and Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), and Fricka (Das Rheingold, Die Walküre), among others.

Her concert repertoire additionally includes Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and Mozart’s Requiem, which she most recently performed in 2025 at the Philharmonie de Paris under the direction of Omer Meir Wellber.

Following her studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Franz Liszt” Weimar and the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan, as well as her concert examination at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig, she gained Christel Loetzsch’s first professional experience as a member of the Young Ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden. From 2015 to 2018, Christel Loetzsch was a member of the ensemble of Theater & Philharmonie Thüringen.
