Baritone Kartal Karagedik has earned critical acclaim for his “virile, Mediterranean-toned voice,” noted for its “gentle warmth and emotional depth.”
Kartal Karagedik’s upcoming season includes his role debut as Amfortas in Parsifal, with performances at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp and during the Wiener Festwochen at Theater an der Wien. He will also appear as Giorgio Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata, Prince Yeletsky in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and Peter in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at the Hamburg State Opera.
With over 40 roles to his credit, his versatile repertoire spans from Verdi to Gluck. Notable roles include Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Simon Boccanegra, Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Germont (La traviata), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Zurga (Les pêcheurs de perles), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Oreste (Iphigénie en Tauride), and the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.
Karagedik has performed at leading opera houses and festivals including the Hamburg State Opera, Opéra Vlaanderen, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opéra de Monte Carlo, Torre del Lago Puccini Festival, and Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
On the concert stage, he has appeared in works by Mahler (Symphony No. 8, Kindertotenlieder, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen), Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, as well as in numerous Lieder recitals. He has sung in major venues such as Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Linz’s Brucknerhaus, the Mahler Festival Weeks in Toblach, Vienna’s Mozartsaal, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Hall, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and TivoliVredenburg.
In 2025, Karagedik released his debut album, PROMETHEUS—a collection of Schubert Lieder inspired by classical antiquity and mythology—recorded with pianist Helmut Deutsch.
He has collaborated with renowned conductors including Joana Mallwitz, Stefano Ranzani, Ottavio Dantone, Eliahu Inbal, Gianluca Capuano, Kent Nagano, and Pablo Heras-Casado.
Born in Izmir, Turkey, Karagedik studied voice in his hometown and in Istanbul, later joining the Accademia dell’Opera Italiana in Bologna. Since 2015, he has been a resident artist at the Hamburg State Opera.
Alongside his musical career, Karagedik is also an acclaimed, award-winning photographer. Since 2014, his solo exhibitions have received widespread public and critical praise.
