Ekaterina Gubanova is acknowledged as one of the leading mezzos of our days. Born in Moscow she first studied piano before being trained as an opera singer at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and as a member of the Young Artists Program at the Royal Opera House in London.

Since then, she regularly guests at the major opera houses and festivals worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Lyric Opera Chicago, La Scala in Milano, the Rome Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Opera national de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, the Teatro Real Madrid as well as the Bayreuth festival.

The 2024/25 season sees Ekaterina Gubanova’s in new productions of Das Rheingold at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where she takes on the role of Fricka under the direction of Vladimir Jurowski, and Rusalka (Foreign Princess) at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Later in the season, she also returns to the Paris Opera for Don Carlos and to the Vienna State Opera for a new production of Tannhäuser. The season will be rounded off with several concerts in the USA, where she will appear with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Further concert engagements will take her to Naples with Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and to Valencia with Mahler’s Rückertlieder.

One of her most important roles is Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde), which she first sang with outstanding success at the Opéra National de Paris in 2005. She also became known for her interpretation of Fricka in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, which she performed with Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin and with Kirill Petrenko at the Teatro alla Scala and the Bayerische Staatsoper. A production conducted by Valery Gergiev was recorded for the Mariinsky label.

In the past two seasons, she made her highly acclaimed debuts as Kundry (Parsifal) at the Vienna State Opera (musical director: Philippe Jordan) and Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) at the Greek National Opera in Athens. Her vast operatic repertoire also includes roles such as Eboli (Don Carlos), Amneris (Aida), Adalgisa (Norma), Giovanna Seymour (Anna Bolena), Marina Mniszech (Boris Godunov), Lyubasha (The Tsar’s Bride), Foreign Princess (Rusalka), Marguerite (Damnation du Faust), Mère Marie (Dialogues des Carmelites), Venus (Tannhäuser) and Ortrud (Lohengrin).

Ekaterina Gubanova is also a sought-after concert singer. Not only on the opera stage but also in concert, she works regularly with renowned orchestras and conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Myung-Whun Chung, Semion Bychkov and Kent Nagano. The artist is fequently engaged for Verdi’s Messa da requiem, which she has sung under the baton of Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev and Riccardo Chailly, among others. Her concert repertoire also includes works such as Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Des Knaben Wunderhorn, the Rückert Lieder, his symphonies no. 2 and no. 3, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and works by French and Russian composers.

Ekaterina Gubanova hat sich als eine der führenden Mezzosopranistinnen ihrer Generation etabliert. Die in Moskau geborene Künstlerin begann zuerst Klavier und Chordirigieren zu studieren, legte aber dann den Focus ihres Studiums am Moskauer Tschaikowski-Konservatorium und an der Sibelius-Akademie (Helsinki) auf das Fach Operngesang. Nach ihrem Abschluss wurde sie ins Young Artists Programms des Royal Opera House in London aufgenommen.
