Dovlet Nurgeldiyev

German-Turkmen tenor Dovlet Nurgeldiyev has established himself as one of the most remarkable lyric tenor voices. After studying in Turkmenistan and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he began his international career at the Hamburg State Opera. After his acclaimed debut as Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff, he sang other important roles there, such as Alfredo in La traviata, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Macduff in Macbeth, and Ismaele in Nabucco. Nurgeldiyev’s repertoire also includes roles such as Cassio in Otello, Vladimir in Prince Igor, Lensky in Eugene Onegin, the Steersman in The Flying Dutchman, David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tamino in The Magic Flute, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, and others.

 

He will make significant house debuts in the 2025/26 season, all in Mozart roles. At the Vienna State Opera, he will appear as Ferrando in Così fan tutte under Adam Fischer and at the Opéra national du Capitole in Toulouse as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni in a new production by Agnès Jaoui under the musical direction of Tarmo Peltokoski. In Hamburg, he will be heard as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and in his role debut as Max in Der Freischütz, among others.

 

In the 2024/25 season, Dovlet Nurgeldiyev appeared at the Hamburg State Opera as Grigory (the false Dimitri) in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, and as Ferrando in Così fan tutte. House debuts took him to the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon as Steva in Jenůfa and to the Tokyo Spring Festival as Alfred in Die Fledermaus. On the concert stage, he appeared in gala concerts with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in Malmö, as well as in two works by Arthur Honegger with the Prague Philharmonic: Le Roi David at the Smetana Litomyšl Festival and Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher at the Rudolfinum in Prague. The latter work will also be released on CD in 2026.

 

In 2023/24, he sang Alfredo in La traviata at the Irish National Opera in Dublin, Alfred in Die Fledermaus at the Auditorium de Lyon, and Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In concert performances, he has taken on roles such as Frère Massée in Saint François d’Assise, Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony, and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy under Kent Nagano at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, as well as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on a tour of Spain with the Orchestre National de Lyon.

 

Other recent highlights include the title role in La clemenza di Tito at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Belfiore in La finta giardiniera, and Don Ottavio at the Berlin State Opera. Further engagements have taken him to roles such as Medoro in Orlando Paladino, Alfredo in La traviata, and Alfred in Die Fledermaus at the Bavarian State Opera; Ismaele in Nabucco at the Zurich Opera House; Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Opéra de Lausanne; Lensky and Stabat Mater at the Opéra de Montpellier; Ferrando at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; and, in his American debut, Lensky at the Santa Fe Opera.

 

Dovlet Nurgeldiyev regularly performs with conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Bertrand de Billy, Adam Fischer, Axel Kober, Kent Nagano, Simone Young, and Lahav Shani. He has also worked with renowned directors such as Willy Decker, Calixto Bieito, Hans Neuenfels, Frank Castorf, and David Pountney.
