Mojca Erdmann opened the 2024/25 season with a concert alongside the Boulez Ensemble conducted by Zubin Mehta at the Pierre Boulez Saal, where she was featured in Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, followed by Mahler’s 4th Symphony at the Teatro Filarmonico Verona, Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder with the String Quartet of the Staatskapelle Berlin again at the Pierre Boulez Saal, excerpts from Wagner’s Lohengrin as Elsa with Adam Fischer at the Koncerthuset Copenhagen, Bach’s Johannespassion with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and Lothar Koenigs in Palermo, her debut at the Landestheater Innsbruck in Schoenberg’s Von heute auf morgen, and the world premiere of Alex Nantes’ Symphony Anahata with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg under Kent Nagano at the Elbphilharmonie.

 

Looking ahead to the 2025/26 season, she will also appear in Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor with Scotland’s National Orchestra under Thomas Søndergård in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as song recitals with Malcolm Martineau.

 

In the 2023/24 season, Mojca Erdmann made her role and house debut at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen as Vitellia in Jetske Mijnssen’s new production of La Clemenza di Tito. Additionally, she took on the roles of Klara and Therese in a new production of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati’s opera Amerika at the Zurich Opera House. As a highly sought-after concert and song singer, Mojca Erdmann opened the season with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a Thousand” under Robert Treviño at the Kursaal San Sebastián. At the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp, she sang the Lyrische Symphonie by Alexander Zemlinsky under Kevin John Edusei, and at Müpa Budapest, she was a soloist in Haydn’s Creation under Adam Fischer. Further highlights of the season included her performances at the Musikverein Vienna, the Mozartfest in Augsburg, the Pfingstfestspiele in Baden-Baden with the SWR Symphony Orchestra, as well as song recitals with Malcolm Martineau.

 

In the past season, Erdmann debuted as Doña Clara in Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg at the Ópera de Tenerife. As Artist-in-Residence at the CSO Ada Ankara Concert Hall, she presented three different programs, including works by Mendelssohn, Reimann, and Schönberg. Moreover, Mojca Erdmann performed Berg’s Seven Early Songs with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach at the Konservatoriets Koncertsal in Copenhagen. She also sang Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder with Paavo Järvi and the Berlin Philharmonic in 2019.

 

She made her debut with Wolfgang Rihm’s Aria/Ariadne “Szenarie” under the musical direction of Gianandrea Noseda at the Zurich Opera House. In her hometown of Hamburg, she sang Jörg Widmann’s Arche at the Elbphilharmonie and performed Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and J.S. Bach’s Ich habe genug at the Cologne Philharmonie. Together with pianist Elena Bashkirova, Mojca Erdmann presented several chamber music evenings in Geneva, Andermatt, and at the Cité de la musique in Paris. In the Narodni Dom in Maribor, she and Malcolm Martineau gave a program with works by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Johannes Brahms.

 

Highlights of past seasons include performances at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), and the Forest Bird (Siegfried), under the baton of Fabio Luisi. Zerlina was also the role of her debut at the Teatro Real Madrid in 2013. Mojca Erdmann’s debut in the title role of Alban Berg’s opera Lulu in a new production by Andrea Breth, conducted by Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin, was highly celebrated. Lulu became one of her signature roles, and she performed it in a new production by William Kentridge at the Opera Amsterdam and in Christoph Marthaler’s award-winning production at the Hamburg State Opera. In 2014, the soprano performed as Marzelline in a new production of Beethoven’s Fidelio for the season-opening at La Scala Milan, which was traditionally broadcast live worldwide. At the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Mojca Erdmann could be heard as the Forest Bird in Siegfried with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle. Since her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2006 in the title role of Mozart’s Zaide under Ivor Bolton, Mojca Erdmann has returned to Salzburg as Zelmira in Haydn’s Armida and as Sophie in a new production of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. In 2013, she also performed several world premieres with the Scharoun Ensemble as part of the festival.

 

The soprano is internationally in high demand for her interpretations of contemporary music theatre works: she made her debut at the Berlin State Opera in the world premiere of the production Takemitsu – My Way of Life under the direction of Kent Nagano. In 2009, she performed the title role in Wolfgang Rihm’s monodrama Proserpina, written specifically for her. Rihm also entrusted her with the first soprano role in his opera Dionysos, which premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2010 and had its German premiere in 2012 at the Staatsoper Berlin. Mojca Erdmann’s interpretations of Toshio Hosokawa’s opera Stilles Meer at the Hamburg State Opera and of Widmann’s monumental opera Babylon at the Berlin State Opera were highly praised. In 2020, Mojca Erdmann took on one of the two lead roles in Luca Francesconi’s two-person play Quartett, based on the play of the same name by Heiner Müller. The German version was premiered at the Berlin State Opera under the direction of Daniel Barenboim.

 

The soprano is featured on numerous studio recordings, such as the critically acclaimed recording of Mahler’s 4th Symphony with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under Jonathan Nott, or Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, released by Sony. In 2011, she released a solo album with arias by Mozart and his contemporaries entitled Mozart’s Garden on Deutsche Grammophon. In 2020, Neos released the album Die Schneekönigin, conducted by David Philip Hefti, in which the soprano took the lead role.

 

Together with Daniel Barenboim at the piano and Zubin Mehta conducting, the Pierre-Boulez-Saal recorded Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and Crumb’s Ancient Voices in 2021. In 2022, Pentatone released a new album titled Hans Sommer Orchestral Songs, with Mojca Erdmann in the soloist quartet. It is also important to note her participation in the world premiere of Miroslav Srnka’s Southpole in 2016 at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, conducted by Kirill Petrenko and staged by Hans Neuenfels. She has also performed with Petrenko in Der Rosenkavalier at the Bavarian State Opera. Additionally, she worked with him as Principal Conductor at the Komische Oper Berlin, where she began her career, having been a member of the ensemble from 1997 to 2005, while also studying.

 

Mojca Erdmann’s artistic relationship with Nikolaus Harnoncourt included a recording of Schumann’s Faust-Szenen with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and acclaimed performances of Haydn’s Orlando Paladino with the Berlin Philharmonic.

 

Born in Hamburg, Mojca Erdmann began her first violin lessons at the age of six and sang in the children’s choir of the Hamburg State Opera. After graduating from high school, she studied both violin and voice with Hans Sotin at the Cologne Conservatory. In 2002, she won not only the first prize but also the special prize for contemporary music at the Federal Singing Competition. In 2005, she was awarded the NDR Music Prize by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Luitpold Prize by the Kissinger Sommer.
