Matti Salminen, one of the leading bass singers of our time, was born in Finnland. He studied in his home town Turku, at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, in Germany and in Rome with famous Luigi Ricci.
1966 21 years old Matti Salminen was engaged at Finnish National Opera and since 1969 he has been performing at all the world’s largest opera houses like Paris, Berlin, the Met, La Scala, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Vienna , Tokio etc. 1984-2015 he was a permanent member of the cast in Zurich, Munich, Vienna, Helsinki and Berlin. He has been a regular guest in opera festivals in Salzburg and in years between 1976 and 1988 in Bayreuth singing 151 performances.
His repertoire not only comprised all major roles of Wagner, Mozart and Verdi, but also includes great and significant bass parts like Boris Godunow, Iwan Susanin and others.
In 1995 Matti Salminen has held the title Berliner Kammersänger and in 2003 he was appointed Osterreichischer and Bayerischer Kammersänger. He was Grammy award winner 1992 and 1996, received the Spanish Premio Lirico in 2007, in 2010 the Medalla de oro del Gran Theatre del Liceu and in 2011 of the Zuercher Festspielpreis. German Bundesverdienstkreuz and Kommendörstecknet av Finlands Vita Ros orden were given him 2001.
2016 Matti Salminen had his 50th anniversary on stage.
