Firmly established as one of the leading Mozart bass-baritones of our time, Thomas Tatzl has sung the roles of Papageno, Figaro, Conte Almaviva and Don Giovanni at many of the world’s major opera houses and festivals, including at the Salzburg Festival, Vienna Staatsoper, Teatro La Fenice of Venice, Zurich Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Opéra Monte-Carlo, Teatro Regio di Torino, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Cologne Opera, and NCPA Beijing. At the Teatro alla Scala and Bavarian State Opera he was invited to sing the role of Harlequin in Strauss‘ Ariadne auf Naxos. Cagliari saw his successful début as Ford in Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff. He also appeared in the world première auf Mauricio Sotelo’s El Público at Teatro Real in Madrid.

 

Thomas Tatzl has sung under the baton of many of today’s leading conductors, including Riccardo Muti, Sir Antonio Pappano, Franz Welser-Möst, Pablo Heras-Casado, Nello Santi, Ingo Metzmacher, Philippe Herreweghe, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, James Conlon, James Gaffigan, Ivor Bolton, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Cornelius Meister, Alexander Liebreich, and Jörg-Peter Weigle.

 

A much sought-after concert and oratorio singer, Thomas Tatzl has appeared with Collegium Vocale Gent and with Bachchor Mainz in Bach’s St Matthew Passion, with Le Concert Olympique in Beethoven’s C Major Mass, in Haydn’s Die Schöpfung under Riccardo Muti in Ravenna and on worldwide tour with La Fura dels Baus, and with the Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI di Torino in Gustav Mahler’s Das klagende Lied. The bass solo in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 brought him to the KKL Lucerne, Zurich Tonhalle, Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional and major German concert halls. He has been invited to sing at the Berlin Philharmonie, Antwerp’s deSingel, and Munich’s Prinzregententheater, where he performed Schubert songs with the Munich Philharmonic.

 

Greatly admired for his powerful and charismatic performances of Lied repertoire, Mr. Tatzl has been invited to sing at Schubertiade Hohenems, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Gstaad Menuhin Festival, among others.

 

Thomas Tatzl, a native of the Austrian region of Steiermark, received his first lessons from Sigried Rennert and subsequently began his vocal studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He completed his studies of Lied and opera singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Karlheinz Hanser, graduating with distinction. Thomas has won numerous awards, including from Das Lied – International Song Competition Berlin (2011), Richard Tauber International Competition in London (2010), Concours Ernst Haefliger Gstaad (2010), Concorso di cantanti lirici in Spoleto (2009) and the Zadek Gesangswettbewerb (2009) in Vienna. He was awarded a scholarship by the Hildegard Zadek Society and received an Award of Appreciation from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Still a student, he had his stage debut as Masetto in a Vienna performance of Don Giovanni, before joining the Zurich Opera as an ensemble member. Today Thomas lives in Vienna and Carinthia.

 

Thomas was invited to sing Nanni in Haydn’s L´Infedeltà Delusa at Monte Carlo Opera, as well as in Lille, Bilbao, Valladolid, Luxembourg and the music festival Bremen. Shortly after he sang the title role in Mozart’s Le nozze Di Figaro at the Opera Festival Klosterneuburg.
