The native Bulgarian studied vocals at the Sofia-based academy of music and continued his studies at Accademia Musicale in Rome.

He is laureate of the “Jussi Björling”-competition.


Kamen Chanev gave his opera debute as Duca (Rigoletto) at the Sofia opera where he also performed the roles of e.g. Faust, Werther, Almaviva, Lenski, Edgardo, Tonio, Alfredo, Belmonte, Tamino, Ottavio.

During the past few years he acquired a more dramatic repertoire and gave his debute with roles such as Cavaradossi, Erik, Don Jose, Radames, Calaf.


His career led him, among others, to the following houses:

Staatsoper Wien (Nabucco, Manon Lescaut, Butterfly), Bayerische Staatsoper München (Butterfly, Turandot and Tosca), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Butterfly), Oper Frankfurt (Don Carlo), Opernhaus Zürich (La Traviata), Staatsoper Hamburg (Tosca), La Fenice (Butterfly), Catania (Il Trovatore), Tokyo (Turandot, Ballo in Maschera), Antwerpen, Valencia (Butterfly), Hungarian State Opera (Tosca), Warsaw Opera (Turandot), Sevilla Opera  (Don Carlo), Opera di Roma (Tosca), Cavalleria Rusticana in Tel Aviv


Kamen Chanev collaborated with the following conductors (among others):

Among recent projects are:

Tosca and Turandot at Munich’s State Opera, Manon Lescaut at Hamburg’s State Opera, Aida at the Warsaw Opera,  Carmen at the Opera House Basel, Attila at Rome’s Opera House, Cavalleria Rusticana in Ancona and at Rome’s Opera House, a production of Manon Lescaut at the Washington Opera, Ballo in maschera and Don Carlos at Frankfurt’s Opera House


Debut at Berlin’s State Opera with Ballo in maschera, Turandot at Rome’s Opera House , Ballo in maschera at Vienna’s State Opera as well as at the Tel Aviv Opera, Turandot in Montreal,   Cavalleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci at Budapest Opera House, Turandot at Berlin’s Deutsche Oper, Tosca at Savonlinna Festival as well as several concerts and performances in Bulgaria.


Future projects include:  Aida at Montreal Opera House, Andrea Chenier and Il trovatore at Budapest State Opera, Tosca at Canadian’s Opera Toronto,  Turandot at Berlin’s Deutsche Oper
