| Peter Schneider was born in Vienna in 1939. When he was eight years old he became a Wiener Sängerknabe and toured with them around the world. While still at school he commenced his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music taking composition with Karl Schiske and conducting with Hans Swarowsky. After completing his studies he became a coach, Studienleiter and conductor in Salzburg and Heidelberg. He eventually became conductor in residence at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf-Duisburg. During the ten years he spent at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, he acquired a knowledge of almost the whole opera repertoire. In 1978 Peter Schneider was appointed General Music Director in Bremen. Guest concerts and opera engagements took him to nearly all the world?s musical centres. Peter Schneider has been conducting regularly in Bayreuth since 1981, starting with THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, and subsequently, LOHENGRIN. He won international acclaim when he stepped in for Georg Solti conducting the RING cycle. In 1985 he became Opera- and General Music Director at the Nationaltheater Mannheim for two years. Guest engagements in London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Dresden, Torino, Venice, Tokyo, and San Francisco followed. Since the beginning of the 1993/94 season he has been Chief Conductor of the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Bayerisches Staatsorchester in Munich succeeding Wolfgang Sawallisch. After five years in this function Peter Schneider is still first permanent guest conductor of Munich. In 1995 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York conducting DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. He appears as a regular guest conductor at the Vienna State Opera, the State Opera of Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and at the Hamburg State Opera. He was nominated "Conductor of the year" for the third time by the opera house of Barcelona.
